Last year I wrote about my plans to start a tool library in Auckland, I’m excited to announce that we have officially opened!
The Auckland Library of Tools (ALoT) is a community project lead by myself and Tom Greer, with help from some amazingly clever volunteers (the joke is that neither Tom and I are particularly knowledgeable about tools…). The project is umbrellaed by Transition Town community Grey Lynn 2030.
ALoT is a library where members have access to a wide range of tools (and things!). By pooling our resources, we have access to material goods and reduce net consumption, cost, and the need to own and store tools. In addition, we hope to create a community hub where people are empowered to learn, share and create, and perhaps even get to know their neighbours. Instrumental to this is our partnership with Hackland, an existing makerspace located in Kingsland.

Thanks to Dani who dropped off a big box of donations, a step ladder and a printer! Tom had fun sorting through all of our donations this weekend. ALoT will be opening in the new space at Hackland. Massive thanks to Hackland who have been supporting us with getting off the ground!
ALoT was established thanks to support from Waitemata Local Board, Grey Lynn 2030, Hackland, MyTurn and amazing individuals who have generously volunteered their time and skills. As we have just limited start-up finds ($2000, which is about the price of a decent power tool set!), we have relied on the generosity of our community. ALoT would not exist without the help and support of these groups and individuals.
ALoT has a growing supply of tools and equipment, all of which have been donated by indiviudals, groups and our volunteers- thank you! Once our membership grows, we will be able to purchase popular high-quality tools and equipment such as electric hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, and duplicates of things we already have, please let us know what you would like. Our volunteers and Hackland members have been keeping our donated goods well-maintained and safe to use.

Thank you to the dashing Ash for this generous donation, a basically new drill! Ash bought this drill only needing it for one project, so it's now surplus to his requirements. Sounds like Ash needed a tool library! ALoT is still in the process of getting up and cataloging tools. If you're keen to help out, send us a message, or join our volunteer Facebook Group (Auckland Library of Tools Volunteers).
Annual memberships are $120 per year (just $10 a month is cheap as!), or $60 for students and community service card holders. We also have 3 monthly memberships, and if you are a member of Hackland, there is a discounted membership rate to join. For more info and to join please visit our website.
Come to our launch party!
We are hosting our official launch party this Saturday, March 30th. There will be live music, an upcycled makers market, discounted memberships ($99.99 for the year!) and a chance to check out our space and Hackland. Come along, bring your family, mates, and any tools you wish to donate! Full event details can be found on Facebook or Eventbrite.
